📈 🐟 Aquaculture is rising fast!40% of the world's population depends on seafood for their protein intake. But as you certainly know, we have reached a situation of over-exploitation for most fish. So, what's the solution? Aquaculture. That's notably the case in Asia with an impressive growth in aquaculture farming. Until recently, fish farming was often rudimentary and operated by a lot of small and medium-sized farms. As for "in-land farming", digitisation is finally reaching aquaculture with local startups such as eFishery (a rare new unicorn in 2023) or JALA.In the rest of the world, we also observe new technologies in aquaculture, notably for monitoring, feeding, or maintaining the safety of the installations. While all the talk is on alternative proteins, we should remember that for most consumers "eating less meat" often means "switch from meat to fish".#agtech #asia #fish #aquaculture

The fact that National Geographic felt it necessary to write an article titled “What is Aquaculture?” in 2023 is both encouraging and alarming. Some folks date the start of aquaculture to the Egyptians in 4,000 BCE, farming tilapia along the Nile. The oldest fish farming manual (for carp) was written in China in 475 BCE. Imagine NatGeo publishing an article titled “What is Agriculture?”Either way, aquaculture really needs to be less fringe and more mainstream. Fish farming, done well, has the the lowest carbon footprint of any common commercial animal protein. Why? Well, for starters, fish are suspended in water, so they do not need to expend the basic energy involved in staying upright. Harnessing that kind of energy efficiency is almost impossible in land-based commercial livestock processes.Once National Geographic starts writing articles on specific types of aquaculture, then we’ll be getting somewhere. Because not all aquaculture is created equal.
