The Wisconsin Badgers football team looked to rebound from an ugly loss to Indiana as they welcomed Northwestern to Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

The Badgers' season-long struggles, however, continued in a dispiriting 24-10 loss to Northwestern.

Here's how the game unfolded in reverse chronological order.

Final: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10

The Wildcats set the tone in the first half and never looked back in taking down Wisconsin on Saturday, 24-10.

The Badgers drop to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in Big Ten play.

Any hopes of playing in the Big Ten title game are gone. And the team's bowl streak of 21 straight seasons is clearly in jeopardy with two games left.

The Badgers play Nebraska next Saturday in the final home game of the season. Wisconsin closes out the season Nov. 25 at Minnesota.

Jackson Acker scores a touchdown with 11 seconds left for Wisconsin

It took 59 minutes, 49 seconds but the Wisconsin Badgers finally get in the end zone.

Backup running back Jackson Acker scored from 3 yards with 11 seconds remaining on a 13-play, 70-yard drive.

But Northwestern is just one kneel down away from the victory.

Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10

Northwestern's offense hasn't done anything this half but it doesn't matter. Wildcats will upset Badgers

Camp Randall Stadium probably has never been so quiet.

Wisconsin is about to lose its third straight game overall and third straight at home. That's unheard of for this program. But that's the state of the Wisconsin Badgers right now.

Northwestern punts again after three plays and 1 yard, its fifth straight punt in the second half. The Badgers get it back with 4:08 left in the game, but it doesn't matter. The Badgers are just minutes away from another disheartening loss.

Wisconsin's offense punts again as Badgers about to lose third straight game

Luke Fickell's offensive system came into the season with a lot of fanfare but it's been a disappointment.

The Badgers failed to score a touchdown against Iowa in a loss four weeks ago, the first time that happened in over three years.

Now, they only have three points against Northwestern and have gone eight straight possessions without scoring. The last time the Badgers have scored this few points was in 1995, the Fox Sports 1 broadcast noted.

The Badgers punt again after a seven-play, 22-yard drive. Northwestern leads 24-3 with 6:28 left

Wisconsin defense forces another Northwestern punt but time is slipping away

The Badgers defense again holds the Wildcats offense. However, it might not matter given the state of the Wisconsin offense.

Northwestern has punted on all four of their possessions this half and has gone three and out on three of its four drives.

But the Badgers are still down, 24-3, with 9:04 left in the game since Phil Longo's offense has gone scoreless this half as well.

The Badgers fan shots that the Fox Sports 1 broadcast keeps showing are pretty depressing.

Wisconsin turns ball over on a Tanner Mordecai fumble

Ouch.

The Badgers offense continues to make mistakes as this game goes on. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai was stripped and lost a fumble at the Northwestern 29-yard line to end what had been a promising drive going.

But that's the way this game and season has gone.

Fourth quarter begins with Wisconsin down 24-3

The Badgers force another punt but the offense hasn't shown that anything to inspire much hope in a comeback. Tanner Mordecai has had a couple long passes in this one, but the run game has been non-existent.

Wisconsin had a miracle comeback against Illinois a few weeks ago with Braedyn Locke at quarterback. It doesn't seem like that will happen in this one.

Northwestern players jump around at Camp Randall Stadium

Not a sight Wisconsin coaches and players want to see across the sideline: Northwestern players jumping around before the start of the fourth quarter.

But they certainly have earned every right to celebrate. They entered the game 10.5 point underdogs and unless something drastically changes they're about to pull off the big upset. The Badgers likely won't be big favorites any more in this season. They were also nearly 10-point favorites at Indiana. We know how that game went.

Northwestern on the move as third quarter comes to an end

After not getting a first down on their first two possessions of the second half, Northwestern's offense has found life again.

And the Wildcats are moving the ball like they did in the first half. They have two first downs and will face a third down when the fourth quarter begins.

It's the end of the third quarter and Northwestern still leads Wisconsin, 24-3.

It's jump around time in Madison. But there's certainly not much on the field for Badgers fans to jump around for.

Wisconsin's offense goes no where, Tanner Mordecai sacked

Wisconsin got great field position again and started at the Northwestern 49-yard line. But the Badgers kept going backward and were forced to punt after failing to get a first down.

First, there was a holding penalty on second down and then on third and 9, quarterback Tanner Mordecai was sacked for a 10-yard loss that pushed the Badgers all the way back to their own 40-yard line.

The drive: 3 plays, -9 yards.

The score remains Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 3 with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

Social media reacts to Badgers' dreadful performance vs. Northwestern

Rightfully so, Wisconsin football fans have been disgruntled for much of the season. At halftime, social media wasn't as quiet as it is right now at Camp Randall Stadium.

Here's a sampling of the reactions.

Wisconsin defense forces another punt. Can Tanner Mordecai and the offense find the end zone?

After getting torched in the first half, the Badgers defense has come to play in the second half.

They force another three and out from Northwestern.

Not counting the Wildcats' final possession in the first half that was a kneel down, Northwestern scored on all four possessions. Those drives averaged 10.75 plays per possession.

For the first two drives of the second half, the Wildcats have six total plays for -4 yards.

Now the question is whether the Badgers' offense can do anything.

Badgers offense finally moving but drive comes up short

The Badgers finally have something cooking after getting their first defensive stop of the game. The Badgers started the drive at the Northwestern 48-yard line and have marched into the Wildcats red zone.

But the drive stalled and the Badgers leave with no points after they failed to convert a fourth down at the Northwestern 8-yard line.

On fourth and 4, Tanner Mordecai's pass for Vinny Anthony in the end zone was incomplete. The score remains Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 3 with 8:04 left in the third quarter.

Wisconsin forces Northwestern into its first punt of game

Northwestern opens with the ball, looking to make it 5-for-5 in scoring on the game.

But the Badgers actually get a stop. It's the first time the Badgers have prevented the Wildcats from scoring on a drive all game.

The big play on the drive a sack by Christian Alliegro on Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant on third and long. This came after Bryant had fumbled the snap on second down to lose 6 yards.

Halftime numbers paint a horror story for Wisconsin

Northwestern came into the game averaging less than 100 yards on the ground and 292.1 yards of total offense per game. They've surpassed both totals in the first half, with 294 total yards and 125 rushing yards.

Kettle Moraine High School graduate David Braun is well on his way to becoming the second Wisconsin native head coach (Jake Dickert of Washington State) to beat UW this season.

UW's total yardage deficit is 294-145. Northwestern owns time of possession, 19 minutes to 10. And of course, the eye-popping stat of the day is Northwestern converting 10 of 11 third downs (and the only miss played into a field goal). Wisconsin, by comparison is 2 of 7.

The Badgers have 14 yards rushing on eight attempts. Braelon Allen has three carries for three yards.

Tanner Mordecai is 13 of 19 passing for 141 yards in his first game back from a broken hand, but it hasn't been nearly enough for the Badgers. Will Pauling has three catches for 46 yards.

Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant, also back from injury, is 14 for 20 for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

Wisconsin finds some rhythm but ultimately just punts again

Tanner Mordecai was able to complete a couple passes, but the Badgers couldn't get downfield, and drops by Skyler Bell and Vinny Anthony put UW in a position where it had to punt to keep the Wildcats from tacking on extra points with 14 seconds left.

Boos raining down on the Badgers, who will go to the locker room down, 24-3.

HALFTIME: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 3

Ben Barten brings down Ben Bryant, and Northwestern kicks a field goal

Wisconsin finally, finally got a third-down stop, with Ben Bryant dragging down Ben Bryant from behind. Lot of B's. The 28-yard field goal from Jack Olsen is good, and there's 1:06 to go with UW facing a three-touchdown deficit.

Northwestern merely 10 of 11 on third down now. It's an 11-play, 68-yard drive.

NORTHWESTERN 24, WISCONSIN 3, 1:06/2nd

Third and goal from the 13-yard line and Badgers timeout with 1:20 left

We're about to see if it's just plain cosmic at this point.

After a penalty and a couple incomplete passes, Northwestern finds itself with a 3rd and goal from the 13-yard line. Wisconsin cannot allow the Wildcats to score again, needless to say.

Northwestern 10 of 10 on third-down today.

Near-interception goes for naught, and Wildcats are inside the 10

Maema Njongmeta forced a wounded-duck throw on first down that Jason Maitre made a diving try for, but he couldn't get the interception.

And then on 3rd and 7, Bryant found Marshall Lang, who weaved his way to 12 yards and Northwestern is now 10 of 10 on third down and have a first and goal on the UW 8-yard line.

Wisconsin simply CANNOT stop Northwestern on third down

The Wildcats are 9 for 9 now. Is this even possible?

It was just a simple toss play and Wisconsin seemed to be in position to rein in A.J. Henning, but he got 9 yards on 3rd and 5.

The Wildcats are down to the UW 23-yard line.

This is jaw dropping; Northwestern with another massive play

Somehow, A.J. Henning of Northwestern just made a one-handed catch good for 41 yards while falling to the turf. He'd been interfered with, too, by Hunter Wohler, but it didn't end up mattering (and no flag was thrown).

Cam Porter follows with a 4-yard run that typifies UW's defensive performance today: missed tackles.

Obviously, Wisconsin has struggled and is coming off a humbling loss to Indiana. But this is really quite another level, isn't it?

The defense has surrendered three touchdowns and Northwestern is 8 for 8 on third down. The running game has eight yards on seven carries. And Northwestern might have at least a 28-3 lead by halftime.

Disaster: Vakos misses the field goal

Gruesome.

On third down, Wisconsin wanted pass interference on a pass to Chimere Dike in the end zone but didn't get the flag. The Badgers elected to try a field goal, but Nathanial Vakos missed it well wide left. It's kind of a worst case scenario for UW today.

There's 5:29 before half, and Wisconsin could really use that half.

Wisconsin gets a big play to open this series

Will Pauling ran a route across the middle of the field and hauled in a great pass from Mordecai, good for 33 yards to the Northwestern 25-yard line. That's huge; UW already knocking on the door after a short kick and big pass play.

UW, though, can't get a completion on first down and only managed three yards on second, so it's a 3rd and 7 upcoming for UW.

Badgers have good field position again

UW will start at its own 31-yard line after Marty Strey fielded a pooch kick from Northwestern, but UW had even better field position last time and didn't do anything with it.

It's obviously well into the danger zone for UW, which needs to put together a drive. Northwestern was a program in shambles at the start of the season and Wisconsin was one with massive expectations, but UW is in danger of losing a third straight game and needing to finish the season with two wins just to finish above .500 in Big Ten play.

Another Northwestern touchdown, and Badgers are getting walloped

On another 3rd and 6, Northwestern moved to 8 for 8 on third-down conversions, in the worst way possible. Cam Johnson got a step on his man, Alexander Smith, and the Wildcats have yet another touchdown on a lofted ball by quarterback Ben Bryant that perfectly found its target. A nine-play, 90 yard drive that took 3:32 ends in a 24-yard touchdown.

Ben Bryant is 12 for 15 passing for 116 yards and two scores. The Wildcats are absolutely thrashing Wisconsin's defense

Raymond Niro was wide open for a 29-yard reception shortly after Northwestern moved to 7 for 7 on third-down conversions earlier in the drive. It's a blowout thus far.

NORTHWESTERN 21, WISCONSIN 3, 6:41/2nd

Massive gain on first down for the WIldcats

Immediately, Northwestern finds a way out of bad field position. Joseph Himon just ran for 32 yards on first down, and then added another 5 yards after it appeared the Wildcats were bottled up.

This is easily the worst the UW defense has looked this year. Long way to go, but pretty dismal signs thus far.

Northwestern just the better team right now

Hayden Rucci caught a pass on 3rd and 4 but got cut down after just a yard; UW has to punt again from the Northwestern 42-yard line. Mordecai is completing passes (he's 8 for 10), but they're all for ultra-short gains, and the Badgers aren't breaking any tackles.

That puts the defense right back on the field, and that unit has obviously struggled thus far. There's 10:13 left before halftime. Northwestern will take over at its 10.

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (2)

Vinny Anthony with a solid kickoff return

Perhaps that's a spark. Vinny Anthony, who's played a starring role thus far for the Badgers (as much as any UW player can have a starring role to this point), just brought a kickoff 25 yards to the 37-yard line to open up this new series.

Cade Yacamelli is in the game at running back, which is interesting. Offense needs to show something in a hurry before this gets away.

Touchdown Northwestern

Ben Bryant rolled out to his right and had wide open space in front of him on 2nd and goal, and he trotted into the end zone. The Wildcats have a 14-3 lead in the early moments of the second quarter.

Wisconsin's offense has been the problem this year while the defense has held its own. Today, we haven't seen much from the defense.

The Wildcats, with one of the worst offenses in a Big Ten full of iffy offenses, are having their way early. Eleven play drive, 68 yards, 5:08.

NORTHWESTERN 14, WISCONSIN 3, 12:54/2nd

Stop me if you heard this before: Northwestern converted a third down

Man what is going on today? After Ricardo Hallman made a nice play to hold Northwestern to a 1-yard gain, Cam Porter got 6 yards on the ground when he needed four, and Northwestern is now 6 for 6 on third-down attempts.

Now, the Wildcats are down to the goal line and in great position to take a 14-3 lead.

Wisconsin commits a personal-foul facemask penalty as first quarter ends

Ben Barten gets flagged for a 15-yard facemask penalty for the first penalty of the game, and as time winds down in the first quarter, Northwestern is absolutely cooking. The Wildcats will have 2nd and 5 on the Badgers' 12-yard line on the other side.

Northwestern got 120 yards of offense in the first quarter on 19 plays. Very rough start for the defense. This is an opponent that averages 275 yards per game (though they've been playing without Bryant).

END FIRST QUARTER: Northwestern 7, Wisconsin 3

Northwestern now 5 for 5 on third down

This is already getting a bit ridiculous; Wisconsin has surrendered first downs on five straight third-down attempts. Northwestern needed 4 yards and got 6 on a pass to Cam Johnson.

The Wildcats are having no problems with Wisconsin's defense, which has been strong this season. Cam Porter now has 40 yards rushing on four carries, and NU is across midfield.

Wisconsin goes three and out

Not the type of response you wanted to see.

Bryson Green couldn't reel in a low throw on 3rd and 2, and the Badgers are about to punt the ball right back to Northwestern. Tanner Mordecai is 5 of 7 for 61 yards in the early going, with a 35-yard connection with Vinny Anthony doing most of the damage there.

The Wildcats will start at their own 32-yard line with 3:02 left in the first quarter.

Touchdown Northwestern, and Wisconsin trails

Ugly.

A.J. Henning was WIDE open and Ben Bryant found him on another third down for a 23-yard touchdown. UW brought pressure that almost got home, but clearly someone missed an assignment on the back end.

And just like that, Wisconsin is trailing. The Wildcats went 4 for 4 on third-down conversions on that drive, including the 3rd and 11 on the touchdown. Only one was 3rd and 1, too; the others were 5 and 4 yards.

That's an efficient 12-play drive that covered 79 yards in 6:08.

Northwestern scored a touchdown last week against Iowa with 1:50 to go, its only score of the game. Clearly, the return of Ben Bryant is a good thing for the Wildcats, and he's already overshadowing the return of Wisconsin's quarterback, Tanner Mordecai.

NORTHWESTERN 7, WISCONSIN 3, 4:12/1st

Northwestern has already converted three third downs on this drive

Including a 17-yard run by Cam Porter right up the gut, Northwestern has converted two third downs already on this drive and has had no trouble moving the ball. Bryant has already completed 4 of 5 passes (the fifth hit his receiver right between the numbers and was dropped) for 28 yards.

Nyzier Fourqurean made a nice tackle for no gain setting up 3rd and 5 for Northwestern after that, but Bryant found Bryce Kirtz for the conversion and the Wildcats have a first down at the Badgers' 26-yard line.

Northwestern quarterback facing off with his former coach, Luke Fickell

Ben Bryant is under center for Northwestern, and he's got a familiar face on the Wisconsin sideline; Bryant played in 11 games at quarterback for Cincinnati last year under Fickell before both left for different Big Ten programs.

Just like UW, Northwestern's quarterback has been sidelined for a while. Bryant hasn't played since Sept. 30 against Penn State, when he suffered an upper body injury.

Badgers drive stalls in the red zone, but Vakos gets the field goal to give UW the lead

Wisconsin got as far as the Northwestern 14-yard line, but in a familiar refrain, Wisconsin couldn't cash that in. Tanner Mordecai was tripped up on third and 8 for a sack, bringing in Nathanial Vakos for a 33-yard attempt. He pushed it a little bit, but it was still between the uprights, and Wisconsin has the first points of the night.

It's a 10-play, 57-yard drive over the game's first 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

WISCONSIN 3, NORTHWESTERN 0, 10:25/1st

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (3)

Will Pauling makes a first-down catch but takes a shot, but Badgers driving

Will Pauling, the team's best receiver this season, made a leaping catch for a first down, but he took a shot to the ribs and gingerly left the field. Definitely something to watch.

On the next play, Mordecai threw a beautiful ball to Vinny Anthony, who brought it down at the left sideline for a 35-yard gain. Wisconsin is cooking early.

Injured players Tanner Mordecai, Braelon Allen and Chimere Dike are officially back

Tanner Mordecai is under center after missing three-plus games with a broken hand. Running back Braelon Allen is out there, and so is receiver Chimere Dike. Mordecai's first pass is complete to Riley Nowakowski for five yards.

Just like last week, true freshman Trech Kekahuna went back to receive a kickoff with Vinny Anthony, though it's Anthony who returns it 18 yards to the 28-yard line.

Northwestern wins the toss

The Wildcats win the coin toss and will defer to the second half, so Wisconsin should be getting the ball first.

Leo Chenal in the house

Leo Chenal, a standout for the Badgers during his three-year career, is back in the house. Chenal, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs last year, has three sacks and 41 tackles with Kansas City this year. The linebacker plays a lot on special teams but also sees about 40% of the snaps on defense.

Chenal was the Linebacker of the Year in the Big Ten as a junior with Wisconsin.

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (4)

Maryland beats Nebraska, Michigan wins, Illinois leading Indiana

Wisconsin's Big Ten plight as it relates to the Big Ten Championship Game really relies on two things only: Wisconsin winning and Iowa losing, but for those interested in other aspects of the conference...

  • Maryland edged Nebraska, 13-10, on a last-second field goal.
  • Michigan defeated Penn State in a showcase game, 24-15.
  • And Illinois has a 42-34 lead over Indiana, the team that shocked Wisconsin last week.

Luke Fickell says be believes Tanner Mordecai 'will give it a go'

Tanner Mordecai, who has missed three and a half games after breaking his hand against Iowa, will potentially be under center against Northwestern today. Head coach Luke Fickell told Mark Tauscher before the game that even though Mordecai (and Braelon Allen and Chimere Dike, for that matter) are game time decisions, he believes Mordecai will "give it a go."

All three players are getting first-team reps in warmups.

A look at the Big Ten West standings

Coming into today, here's where we stood in the Big Ten West:

  • Iowa: 4-2 (7-2 overall)
  • Nebraska: 3-3 (5-4)
  • Wisconsin: 3-3 (5-4)
  • Minnesota: 3-3 (5-4)
  • Northwestern: 2-4 (4-5)
  • Illinois: 2-4 (4-5)
  • Purdue: 1-5 (2-7)

In the East, Michigan and Ohio State are both undefeated at 6-0.

  • Ohio State: 6-0 (9-0)
  • Michigan: 6-0 (9-0)
  • Penn State: 5-1 (8-1)
  • Rutgers: 3-3 (6-3)
  • Maryland: 2-4 (5-4)
  • Michigan State: 1-5 (3-6)
  • Indiana: 1-5 (3-6)

Chimere Dike, Braelon Allen and Tanner Mordecai all warming up before the game

Running back Braelon Allen, quarterback Tanner Mordecai and wide receiver Chimere Dike are all officially questionable today according to the pregame injury report, and all are warming up before the game. Mordecai is throwing a pretty good looking spiral, which is a good sign for the health of his broken hand. For whatever it's worth, the pregame depth chart indicates Mordecai OR Braedyn Locke will start.

Among the players listed as out are safety Kamo'i Latu, missing his second straight game. There aren't any surprises otherwise on the list.

Dike is warming up with a brace on his right knee.

What TV channel is Wisconsin vs Northwestern?

Fox Sports 1

Can the Wisconsin Badgers still win the Big Ten West?

Theoretically, yes. If UW wins its final three games against Northwestern, Nebraska and Minnesota, it will finish 6-3. Right now, Iowa is 4-2 but has the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Badgers, so that means Iowa must lose two of its final three games and finish 5-4 (or 4-5, even).

The Hawkeyes face Rutgers, Illinois and Nebraska, all of whom are .500 or worse in Big Ten play, so don't hold your breath. Iowa and Rutgers kick off at the same time as UW and Northwestern.

Riley Nowakowski and Marquette football having a good week

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (5)

Mark Stewart wrote about Badgers tight end Riley Nowakowski this week, a player who could be among those tasked with stepping up as the UW offense continues to search for playmakers.

Nowakowski hails from Marquette University High School, which, by the way, just defeated powerhouse Kimberly on Friday to reach the WIAA state football final, which hasn't happened for Marquette since 2009 (its only other state final). Fellow alumnus Dare Ogunbowale, a running back who ... kicked a crucial field goal last week? ... has also been in the news.

The state finals will take place Thursday and Friday at Camp Randall Stadium.

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (6)

What's the latest on the Badgers injuries to Tanner Mordecai and Braelon Allen?

Coming into the year, you could have expected quarterback Tanner Mordecai, running back Braelon Allen and running back Chez Mellusi to be Wisconsin's three best players on offense. UW had none of them against Indiana last week, with Mellusi already out for the year, Mordecai sidelined with a broken hand for a third straight week and Allen lost to an injury the week earlier against Ohio State.

Mordecai warmed up before the game against Indiana, but backup Braedyn Locke still took all the snaps. That might be a good sign but it's still unclear if Mordecai will be available at all against Northwestern, let alone start.

The Badgers haven't been able to click on offense even with Mordecai, but it's certainly showing up with Locke, a redshirt freshman seeing the field for the first time in college. Locke has demonstrated elite playbook comprehension, but he's still averaging just 5.1 yards per pass attempt and is completing just 50% of his passes.

Allen, meanwhile, views himself as a game-time decision for Northwestern. Allen has 754 rushing yards this year in eight games (5.8 yards per rush) with eight touchdowns.

REPLAY: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10; Badgers get embarrassed at Camp Randall Stadium (7)

Northwestern is led by a Wisconsin native head coach

Kettle Moraine High School graduate David Braun was thrown into a tough situation when he became head coach of Northwestern in the immediate aftermath of the school firing Pat Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was at the heart of a hazing scandal, and he was fired in July in the early stages of the ramp up to the 2023-24 season.

Braun, the team's defensive coordinator, was given the interim tag, and though the Wildcats looked like one of the weakest teams in the conference, they sprung an overtime upset against Minnesota in September and took down Maryland on Oct. 28. Last week against Iowa, the Wildcats didn't win but showed well at Wrigley Field in a 10-7 loss against a team that probably still stands as the frontrunner to win the division (yes, that says a lot about Iowa and the division, but Northwestern still held its own).

Wisconsin vs. Northwestern odds, money line, over/under point total

Spread: Wisconsin is favored by 11 ½ points

Money line: Wisconsin is -450 on the money line and Indiana is +350

Over/under: 42 ½ points

Wisconsin is averaging 23.5 points per game and allowing 19.1.

Northwestern is averaging 20.1 points per game and allowing 24.2.
